Spring and Summer 2009 Photo I is thankfully still a darkroom course. Students learn how to use their 35mm cameras, how to properly expose and develop film, as well as make silver gelatin prints. Most assignments are technical, working with the creative controls of shutter speed and aperture, as well as exploring traditional photography subject matter such as portraiture and landscape. An assignment dealing with creative darkroom manipulation (solarization, mixed media, stacking negatives, etc.) is introduced towards the end of the course. The final project involves a series of five interrelated images on a theme of the student's own choosing. Students are taught to cut mats for a final portfolio of ten images.
